  • Nepal-China Relations Strengthened with Mutual Respect: PM Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stated that Nepal-China relations have grown stronger through mutual respect and deepening people-to-people ties. He emphasized that the two nations share a bond rooted in civilizational, historical, and cultural affinity.

Addressing a special event in Kathmandu on Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China, Prime Minister Oli highlighted that the relationship is guided by mutual trust and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

"Nepal remains firmly committed to the One China Policy," the Prime Minister affirmed. "China, in turn, has consistently respected Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence. China is not just our neighbor but also a credible development partner."

He further noted the enduring and time-tested friendship between the two countries, recalling key milestones in bilateral ties. "The historic visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal in 2019 significantly elevated our partnership, establishing a strategic cooperation framework based on mutual trust and shared prosperity."

Prime Minister Oli also referenced his official visit to China in 2024, which he described as "very fruitful," citing meetings with high-level dignitaries and the signing of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Framework Agreement. "This agreement has reinforced our shared commitment to cooperation and development," he said.

He acknowledged China’s continued support in Nepal’s infrastructure and connectivity projects, and highlighted expanding collaboration in agriculture, trade, transit, energy, health, digital technology, and climate resilience.

On the recent flash flood in the Lhende stream along the Nepal-China border, PM Oli stressed the urgency of joint Himalayan development initiatives. "This disaster underscored the need for early warning systems, information exchange, and sustainable development efforts in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem," he stated.

The Prime Minister also commended China’s remarkable development achievements, including poverty alleviation, technological innovation, and leadership in sustainable development and global cooperation. "These milestones have not only transformed China but have also contributed to global stability and progress," he said.

He concluded by noting that Nepal draws inspiration from China’s progress, as it works toward its national vision of a "Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali."
