Students were seen leaving school under the scorching sun in Lahore as temperatures soared across Pakistan’s most populous province. The Punjab provincial government announced on May 20 that all public and private schools would begin their summer vacations early due to the extreme heat.
The decision comes amid a blistering heatwave sweeping through the region, raising concerns about student health and safety. With temperatures reaching dangerous levels, education officials said the move was necessary to protect children from heat-related illnesses.
“This is an urgent measure to ensure the well-being of our students,” an official from the Punjab Education Department stated.
Pakistan, one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, has experienced increasingly frequent and intense heat waves in recent years, particularly affecting urban centers like Lahore.
