  • Ride-Sharing Services Legalized in Gandaki Province

The Gandaki Province government has officially legalized ride-sharing services, marking a significant regional transportation policy shift. Private two-wheelers and four-wheelers can now operate as ride-sharing vehicles, provided they comply with necessary procedures, including securing passenger insurance.

Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation, Prakash Bahadur KC, announced that the decision was formalized after the Council of Ministers approved the Vehicle and Transportation Management Regulation 2080 BS last Tuesday.

“The new regulation will come into effect very soon,” Minister KC assured. “This law not only legalizes ride-sharing but also sets a framework to properly regulate it.” He emphasized that the regulation was introduced following extensive consultations with stakeholders.

This move follows a previous ruling by the Supreme Court, which stated that ride-sharing services could operate within a legal framework, taking into account consumer rights as well as labor and employment concerns.

Minister KC further noted that the province has the authority to manage transportation within its jurisdiction, which enables it to enact this regulation independently.

Currently, popular ride-sharing platforms such as InDrive, Sajilo, Taximandu, and Pathao are active in Nepal. With this legal backing in Gandaki Province, these services—and potentially new ones—are expected to expand their reach and operations in the region.
