The Mangsebung Rural Municipality in Ilam district has begun the process of introducing a Bantawa Language Curriculum as part of a broader initiative to promote mother tongues in the region.
According to Rural Municipality Chairperson Hemanta Rai, a task force has already been formed to develop the curriculum and oversee its implementation. "We have started developing the Bantawa Language Curriculum based on discussions and consultations with relevant stakeholders. The goal is to introduce the language in schools where the Bantawa-speaking population is significant," said Chairperson Rai.
This initiative follows the successful implementation of both the Local Curriculum and the Limbu Language Curriculum in local schools.
The taskforce, led by Jiban Jyoti Secondary School Headmaster Madan Kumar Rai, includes members Udaya Rai, Sakuntala Rai, Ambika Prasad Rai, and former teacher Gunja Kumar Rai. Education Officer Yubraj Khanal is also a part of the committee.
The local community has welcomed the move, viewing it as an important step toward safeguarding linguistic and cultural heritage, a right enshrined in the constitution.
Krishna Kumar Rai, Central Assistant General Secretary of Kiran Rai Yoyokhha, said, "We have taken this positively," adding that his organization is ready to extend support for the curriculum's implementation.
According to the 2021 National Population and Housing Census, the Limbu community comprises 42.83% of the population in Mangsebung Rural Municipality, while the Rai community accounts for 33.6%.
