Retail rice prices in Japan have increased for the first time in 10 weeks, according to official data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
During the week ending July 27, the average retail price of rice sold at supermarkets nationwide rose to 3,625 yen (approximately 24.60 USD) per 5 kilograms, up 40 yen from the previous week.
The ministry attributed the price increase to a slowdown in the release of government stockpile rice, which had previously helped suppress market prices.
Blended rice varieties-often made using stockpiled rice-also saw a rise, with average prices reaching 3,133 yen per 5 kg, an increase of 45 yen compared to the previous week.
The ministry compiles weekly rice price data from around 1,000 supermarkets across Japan, providing a snapshot of trends in the retail food market.
