Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that artificial intelligence (AI) is not only a vision for the future but also an urgent necessity for the present.
Speaking at a talk programme organized by the Science and Information Technology Department of the party at the central office in Lalitpur on Sunday, President Deuba emphasized the growing significance of information technology in delivering public services efficiently and transparently. The event was titled "AI for Nepal's Development."
“We live in an era defined by science and technology. AI is no longer just a dream; it is a present-day requirement,” Deuba stated. “We must harness the potential of AI in key sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, employment, and public service delivery.”
He highlighted the increasing accessibility of internet services, mobile banking, digital forms, and online platforms in health and education as examples of how IT is already shaping an easier, more inclusive, and dignified life for citizens.
Deuba credited previous Nepali Congress-led governments for laying the groundwork through the introduction of the Telecommunications Policy, Act, and Regulations, which, he said, have played a key role in expanding digital access to remote areas. “While progress has been made, there is still much to be done to fully leverage IT for greater improvements in banking, agriculture, health, and public services,” he added.
He asserted that these achievements were possible due to the liberal and progressive policies adopted by the Nepali Congress. “The party remains committed to promoting social transformation through innovation and technology. We are now focused on boosting economic activity through the extensive use of IT,” Deuba said, calling on youth entrepreneurs, researchers, and the private sector to collaborate in advancing the nation's technological landscape.
“All stakeholders must work together to build a prosperous, digital Nepal by advancing innovation and technology. The NC is thoroughly studying current issues in the IT sector,” he concluded.
Also speaking at the event, AI expert Dr. Suresh Pokharel remarked on the rapid development of AI and the importance of its proper application for national progress.
Sushila Bhatta Mishra, Head of the NC's Science and IT Department, said the programme aimed to explore how Nepal can harness AI for sustainable development. She stressed the need for informed policies to address challenges and unlock opportunities associated with AI.
