Livestock farmers in Upper Mustang who suffered losses due to snow leopard attacks have been provided with relief funds.
The National Nature Conservation Trust, in coordination with the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) and the Area Conservation Office in Lomanthang, distributed compensation to affected farmers.
According to Umesh Paudel, Chief of the ACAP Lomanthang Office, a total of Rs 1.1 million was distributed to farmers whose livestock were killed or injured in snow leopard attacks during the last fiscal year.
Of the total amount, 43 percent was provided as direct compensation for the losses, while the remaining amount was allocated as additional assistance.
Paudel added that efforts are underway to ensure the timely distribution of relief, ideally within a few months of the incident. The office has been regularly issuing notices urging farmers to file compensation claims.
In response to the increasing number of such incidents, a Human-Wildlife Conflict Fund is also being established. The relief was provided under the guidelines of the Wildlife Loss Directive, 2080, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in collaboration with ACAP.
