In a meaningful step toward land justice, Dharche Rural Municipality has distributed land ownership certificates to landless Dalit families, bringing long-awaited relief to those who have farmed the land for generations without legal rights.
On Saturday, Rural Municipality Chair Laxman Gurung announced that the land titles were handed over through the District Committee of the Land Problem Resolution Commission. Among the recipients were Mangal BK, Raju BK, Ait Singh Kami, and Ram Bahadur Kami-long-time residents and farmers of the area.
More than 250 landless settlers have applied for land titles in Dharche, and according to Gurung, the necessary process has already been initiated to grant them formal ownership.
“This is part of an ongoing effort,” Gurung said. “Three years ago, all 11 local levels in Gorkha district signed an agreement with the commission to begin the process of granting land to landless Dalits, squatters, and unorganized settlers. Today’s distribution is a result of that commitment.”
For many, the land titles are more than just paperwork- they’re a symbol of recognition and dignity. “I thought I would die without ever having land in my name,” said Ait Singh Kami, holding his new land certificate. “We’ve been farming this land for years. I’m so happy the village council finally made it official.”
The rural municipality’s move marks a step forward in addressing historical inequalities, giving families a sense of stability and ownership they’ve long been denied.
